The Wyndham Basketball Association are thrilled to share with you the signing of Maurice Howard to the Championship Men’s team for the 2022 season.

Maurice is a Florida native that played all four years of his college Basketball at Alcorn State University in the Southwestern Athletic Conference.  Throughout his career at Alcorn State, Howard shone and showed gradual improvement each season.  In his senior season, Maurice led the team in scoring and was eighth in the conference, was 3rd in the conference in assists per game and was 4th in the conference in 3P% at the same time as attempting the 4th most 3P for the season.

By the time he concluded his senior season, Maurice had set the school record in 3-pointers made and sits fifth in school history for total assists.  Over his collegiate career, Howard managed to set single game career highs of 31 points, 7 rebounds, 10 assists, 8 x 3P made and 14 x FT made.

Championship Men’s Head Coach Lucas Allen is ecstatic to secure the signature of Maurice for the 2022 season “When I met with Maurice, I had an instant comfortability with him as a person.  He demonstrated a humble confidence but also has that passion and drive to continually grow his game”.  Allen added that his game along with his character will be of huge benefit to the program for this coming season “the combination of Maurice’s talent with his character made it a no-brainer for us.  Having someone that cannot only score in a variety of ways but also create for team mates, be unselfish when needed and defend, were all trademarks of the type of player we were looking for and Maurice ticked all of those boxes”.

Maurice is elated with the opportunity to join the Wyndham Basketball Association family saying that the he decided to sign with us because “they were so transparent with me and they gave me my first opportunity to become a pro Basketball player”.  Howard added that he is looking forwards to getting to Australia and getting to work “I’m looking forwards to meeting my team mates and coaching staff, building chemistry and turning this thing into a Championship program”.

In addition to his playing role, Maurice, along with the other WBA imports will be considerable contributors to the WBA through coaching in various programs and camps.  We look forwards to our community having the opportunity to get to know Maurice and to learn more about our game from him.

Maurice will arrive in Australia in February.

Hillier added that her ability to create her own score along with creating for others was a great asset for the program in 2022 “What I really like about GiGi is her ability to balance getting her own points while assisting others, with a young roster it was vitally important to have a player such as GiGi who is able to make tough plays when the team needs a bucket, yet help our younger stars find their own buckets throughout the game.”

GiGi is pumped with the opportunity to join the Wyndham Basketball Association family saying that “talking to the Head Coach made me feel comfortable, made me feel like family, made me feel like it was home  I’m so excited to be around everyone, I can’t wait to get there”.

The up and coming Wyndham 3×3 tryouts will see teams selected to attend the 2022 3×3 Big Hustle National Qualifiers, with the winners of each age group then moving on to the National Championships.

This tryout and team selection process is the first major step in our Wyndham Way Vision – 3×3 Focus, which will see the Wyndham Basketball Association promote the 3×3 pathway more within our community, and also have a stronger presence on the 3×3 National scene.

For those that are new to the 3×3 world, it is a fast, relentless, physical and exciting format, with shorter and more action filled games. For those that do have experience with 3×3, we most certainly want to see you at tryouts.

There are two additional and major benefits of playing 3×3, the first being that it also develops and greatly assists your normal 5on5 basketball, and the second reason being it also provides you an entirely new pathway in basketball, so it’s a win/win situation.

Although these tryouts will only see one team per age group/per gender selected, we will be hosting more and more 3×3 events as 2022 rolls on, but for the meantime, roll up your sleeves and get along to the tryouts.

The Wyndham Basketball Association are thrilled to share with you the signing of Amanda Paschal to the Championship Women’s team for the 2022 season.

Amanda hails from Brooklyn, N.Y, and started her collegiate career at Junior College – Gulf Coast State, where she helped the Commodores to the 2016 National Junior College Athletic Association National Championship, 2016 Panhandle Conference Championship and 2016 Florida College System Activities Association/NJCAA State Championship.

After a successful start to her career, Amanda then transferred to one of the nation’s biggest programs, the University of Kentucky. Amanda carved out a successful career with the University of Kentucky, where she worked her way in to the core group and main rotation, and also become a leader within the program.

Championship Women’s Head Coach Gerard Hillier is thrilled to secure the signature of Amanda for the 2022 season “We knew instantly that Amanda was the perfect fit for our program, it was obvious right away that Amanda was a hardworking and genuine person who would add great value to our program via her work ethic and personality”.

Hillier added that her ability to play multiple positions gave the roster flexibility for the season ahead “Amanda can easily play the 1, 2 or even 3 spot in our system, which will give our roster a range of different looks throughout the season, Amanda is a very experienced combo guard and can fill whatever role is needed to win on any given night”.

Amanda is elated with the opportunity to join the Wyndham Basketball Association family “ever since I’ve been in contact with the club, they’ve been nothing but friendly, they show love, invited me in as if I was family and I am grateful for the opportunity”.

In addition to his playing role, Amanda, along with the other WBA imports will be considerable contributors to the WBA through coaching in various programs and camps.  We look forwards to our community having the opportunity to get to know Amanda and to learn more about our game from her.

Amanda will arrive in Australia in February.

The WBA has decided that junior domestic competitions this Saturday (November 6th) will be “Welcome Back Round”, where the games will be played according to the released fixture (including Manor Lakes as the second venue), however the results will not be collated for inclusion in ladders nor used for grading purposes.

The late confirmation of vaccination requirements and operating rules which came through from Basketball Victoria and WLS had major impact on providing adequate notice to clubs, teams and families as well as increased risk of operational issues occurring. The WBA were concerned that the game results could be unfair given so many variables.

For example, player registrations are still coming through and therefore player points allocations cannot be finished, domestic clubs are still trying to recruit players and finalise teams (we know there are teams not currently entered), some competitions currently only have 2 teams, and there are major concerns of traffic flow and car parking at Eagle stadium. Another week will allow more time to address these issues.

Please note that people entering and exiting Eagle stadium for COVID vaccinations will be using separate doors to patrons attending for basketball games and programs.

Manor Lakes Parking
Manor Lakes has a new entry for the Stadium for those that haven’t been there this year. The school is also locked off with a court only entrance to the 2 courts/venue spaces. You won’t be able to park on the street and walk through the school you’ll need to park at the carpark near the football oval. Please notify your players of the new entrance.

Getting to the stadium:
Stadium car park is located off Howqua way behind the football oval.
Entrance to the courts is found along the black fence, where the green AstroTurf starts is the entrance to the stadium area.

WBA Management

Return to Sport Update – 3 November 2021

The WBA is excited to be able to share with you all the most recent update in relation to our return to sport.  We thank all of you for waiting patiently for the update, we have wanted to ensure that we had all of the required information available, and now we’re ready to pass it all on.

Both Western Leisure Services and Basketball Victoria have recently provided confirmation on various elements on our return to sport activity. We can therefore provide the following updates:

Eagle Stadium:

    • Reopening – Wednesday 3rd November with standard operating hours
    • Vaccination entry requirements – in line with the current Open Premises Directions (effective 29 October to 18 November 2021), anyone entering Eagle Stadium 16 years of age or over must be fully vaccinated and will be required to show proof of vaccination status upon arrival or provide a medical exemption.
    • Vaccination Hubs – it is expected that the Indoor Vaccination will be bumped out on November 22 and courts 1-4 will be returned for availability from November 23. Until then courts 5 to 12 will be the only ones available for use. The drive through vaccination hub will remain longer than the indoor hub.
    • Car Park/Traffic Flow – significant delays are expected entering the car park at Eagle stadium due to indoor and drive vaccination hubs operating in addition to other users. This will be particularly the case on weekends. We strongly advise you allocate an additional 15-20 minutes to your usual time when travelling to the venue.

Domestic Competitions:

    • Restarts – all domestic competitions will re commence from Saturday 6th November
    • Venues – at this stage we are able to accommodate the majority of domestic games at Eagle stadium with use of external venues for Saturday.
    • Junior Grading – will occur for the first 3 weeks of the season.
    • Size 5 Basketballs – all U8, U10 and U12 matches will use size 5 balls.
    • Player Points System – this system will be introduced for the Summer 22 junior domestic competitions

Operating Rules:

    • Green 50 – as per the BV return to sport update, all competitions training and programs will be operating under Green-50 guidelines:
      • Training and competition can resume with the minimum number of people required
      • A limit of 1 spectator per participant is recommended, up to a Density Quotient (DQ) 1:4m2 and group limits of 30
      • Masks are mandatory for all patrons over 12 years of age at all times unless medically exempt. Players, coaches and referees are exempt while on court participating in an exertive role
      • We’re also asking that players and spectators vacate both the courts and the stadium in a timely manner as soon as their games/activities are completed. (If you are looking to catch up socially with friends, we ask that this takes place outside the stadium).

VJBL:

    • Try-outs – will be held through November at Eagle stadium: Friday 12, Sunday 14, Thursday 18, Friday 19, and Sunday 21. We are waiting on WLS to confirm court availability to set times for each gender and age group.

Senior (Big V & U20):

    • Try-outs/Scrimmages – will be held through November. At this time scheduling of venues and times are being confirmed.

Once again, we thank you for your patience and understanding during these times.  We look forwards to seeing you all back on court and enjoying the opportunity to be around friends and the game itself once more.

WBA Management
