Wyndham Basketball Association has approved its Strategic Plan for the period 2026–2030, marking an exciting new chapter for our association and the broader Wyndham basketball community.
Two key priorities within the Strategic Plan are helping drive this conversation.
Under the Community & Culture pillar, Strategic Item 6 states:
“The Wyndham Basketball community is active and recognised in the broader region, building pride and visibility through its people and programs.”
Under the Communication pillar, Strategic Item 13 states:
“Our visual identity and brand reflect our future direction and resonate with the broader Wyndham Basketball community.”
Together, these priorities provide an opportunity to explore what could become a meaningful and unifying identity for Wyndham Basketball — one that reflects our people, our history, our community and our aspirations for the future.
Most importantly, this is an opportunity for the Wyndham Basketball community to have its say.
Every suggestion will be read and considered, and your input will guide the Board as it works towards a final decision.
At the Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Sunday, 8 December 2019, Werribee Basketball Association members voted to change the association’s name to Wyndham Basketball Association.
The decision reflected an exciting opportunity for the future of the association and basketball across the rapidly growing Wyndham area.
The name Wyndham reflects the City of Wyndham region and encompasses communities including Werribee, Hoppers Crossing, Point Cook, Tarneit, Truganina, Wyndham Vale, Williams Landing, Manor Lakes and Werribee South.
While the association’s name changed to Wyndham Basketball, our traditional colours of gold, royal blue and red were retained, recognising the history and heritage of our basketball community.
Our junior representative teams completed the 2019/20 season as Werribee, while our Big V teams competed as Wyndham in 2020. The junior representative program followed as Wyndham Basketball from the 2020/21 season.
Our history remains an important part of who we are — and as we look to the future, we have an opportunity to build on that history together.

▶ What do we mean by an identity?
In simple terms, an identity is a club moniker, nickname or mascot.
An identity can become something that brings people together: something our players & coaches can wear with pride, our families can support, our volunteers can embrace and our wider community can recognise.
▶ Why was the “Devils” name removed from promotion?
The association stopped using the “Devils” moniker in late 2019, coinciding with the broader organisational name change from Werribee Basketball Association to Wyndham Basketball Association.
This process is not about revisiting or replacing our history. Rather, it is about looking forward and exploring what identity, if any, best represents the Wyndham Basketball community today and into the future.
▶ Can the “Devils” name be suggested?
Yes. We welcome all suggestions providing they are in good taste and not offensive.
▶ Are we changing the name of Wyndham Basketball Association?
No. We are not changing the name of Wyndham Basketball Association.
Over recent years, many people within our basketball community have asked questions such as “Why don’t we have a name?”, “Why can’t we have a nickname?” and “Why can’t we be the Devils?”
Through the consultation undertaken as part of the development of our Strategic Plan, stakeholders identified the potential value of having an identity that could help build community, pride, recognition and belonging.
As a result, the Wyndham Basketball Executive Committee is inviting the entire Wyndham Basketball community — players, coaches, volunteers, officials, parents, families, supporters, life members, past players, past coaches, past officials, and our clubs and programs — to help explore what an identity could look like.
▶ What are we looking to achieve?
Quite simply, we want to listen to our community.
If the Wyndham Basketball community wants an identity, we will work together to establish one that reflects our shared values, our history, our community and our future. The goal is to create something that people can feel proud to be part of.
▶ How can you make a suggestion?
We want to hear from you! You can submit your suggestions through our social media platforms, Facebook and Instagram, or by email to info@wyndhambasketball.com.
Suggestions can be submitted until Sunday, 20 September. We encourage everyone to get involved, share their ideas and encourage others within our basketball community to have their say.
▶ When will people vote?
From 25 September, the Wyndham Basketball community will be invited to vote. Following the suggestion period, the top five names will be collated and presented in a community poll.
▶ When will voting close?
Voting will close on Sunday, 11 October.
▶ What happens after voting closes?
On Monday, 12 October, the Executive Committee will receive the result of the community poll.
From there, the Executive Committee will begin the process of developing and creating the Wyndham Basketball identity. This may include a mascot, merchandise and other exciting opportunities that help bring the identity to life across our association and the broader community.
▶ When will the new identity be announced?
The result will be publicly announced on Sunday, 28 February 2027, at Eagle Stadium – Court 1, 11:00am.

We’re excited to announce our 2026/27 VJBL First Side Head Coaches
Our First Side Head Coaches have been selected for the experience, leadership, and commitment they bring to our program. They will play an important role in developing our athletes, building strong team cultures, and representing Wyndham Basketball
U12 Girls – Brodie Hillier
Brodie returns to Wyndham after coaching within Collingwood’s representative program. A former Wyndham VJBL player and current Big V Division 1 player, she brings valuable playing and coaching experience to lead our U12 Girls.
U12 Boys – Michael “Bluey” Flahive
Bluey is a familiar face around Wyndham Basketball. He currently coaches within the Basketball Victoria and Melbourne United programs and is passionate about helping young players improve. We’re excited to have him leading our U12 Boys.
U14 Girls – Jackie Stephens
Jackie is a current Wyndham VJBL coach, former Big V player and captain, and Basketball Victoria Future Development Program coach. She brings a wealth of representative experience and a strong focus on player development.
U14 Boys – Brad Salter
Brad is a current Wyndham VJBL coach, former Big V player and captain, and Basketball Victoria Future Development Program coach. His experience at both the playing and coaching levels provides a great foundation for our U14 Boys.
U16 Girls – Sarah Sherwood
Sarah is a current Wyndham Big V player and VJBL coach, as well as a Basketball Victoria Future Development Program coach. She has also recently worked with She Hoops and the Australian Opals, bringing valuable high-performance experience to the program.
U16 Boys – Ken Kirkham
Ken is a current Wyndham VJBL coach whose leadership helped guide our U14.1 Boys to qualify for the 2026 National Junior Classic. He is passionate about developing players, helping them reach their potential.
U18 Girls – Kathie Jane
Kathie is a current Wyndham VJBL coach and Assistant Coach of our Wyndham Big V Division 1 Women. Her involvement across both junior and senior basketball provides valuable continuity for our athletes and helps strengthen the pathway from VJBL to Big V.
U18 Boys – Gav Ross
Gav is a current Wyndham VJBL coach and Assistant Coach at Big V Level. His experience across both junior and senior basketball, combined with his commitment to player development, makes him an outstanding leader for our U18 Boys.

The road to the next VJBL season starts very soon! It is time to start preparing, lacing up, and getting ready to bring your best effort to the courts.

Important Eligibility Notes
These specific tryout dates are ONLY for players currently participating in the VJBL.
Invitations for brand new players will be extended after the “Brand New to Rep” tryouts.
U12 Exception: New U12 players are NOT required to attend the “Brand New to Rep” tryouts.
All other age groups MUST attend the “Brand New to Rep” phase to be considered.
If you are interested in playing Under 14, Under 16 or Under 18 representative basketball with Wyndham Basketball for the 2026/27 season, but have not previously played representative basketball, these introductory trials are your first step.
Successful athletes will progress to the official Victorian Junior Basketball League (VJBL) tryouts held later in the year.

Trial dates: Sunday 30 August and Sunday 6 September

Are seeking selection in Under 14, Under 16 or Under 18 representative basketball for the 2026/27 season.
Have not played VJBL basketball within the past two years.
Please note: Under 12 athletes are not required to attend the New to Representative Basketball trials. They will proceed directly to the official VJBL tryouts held during September/October.
Basketball Victoria has partnered with VicHealth to deliver the Set The Standard campaign, a statewide initiative aimed at preventing and reducing racism in community sport through culturally safe and inclusive environments.
The Set The Standard campaign focuses on empowering coaches and community leaders to take meaningful action, from setting expectations and responding to incidents, through to building inclusive everyday habits that shape club culture over time.
Wyndham Basketball Association is the first BV Association to complete the training. Wyndham Basketball’s Executive Committee, Staff and Supervisors all undertook the Anti-Racism training on Thursday 9 July. The session was led by Jamal Elsheikh from Reflect Forward.

Racism in sport can often go unnoticed, despite the lasting impact it can have on individuals and communities. We all need to call out unacceptable and inappropriate behaviour. We want people to want to participate in basketball and feel safe, supported and most importantly feel they belong” said Jason Kelly, General Manager – Wyndham Basketball.

Melbourne United is excited to announce that the club has officially partnered with the Wyndham Basketball Association.
Encompassing one of the largest growth corridors west of Melbourne, the partnership aims to continue growing the sport’s already rapid development in the region.
President of Wyndham Basketball, Nicole Casaccio, touched on their excitement to be partnering with United moving forward.
“This opportunity is on the front doorstep of Wyndham community people and surrounding areas,” Casaccio said.
“We’re talking about young athletes in Hoppers Crossing, Point Cook, Truganina, all throughout that growth corridor. We know we’re the second largest growth corridor behind the city of Casey, and the area is still growing.
“Having our players be able to look at our program and say ‘I’m learning the same stuff or very similar stuff to what NBL players are learning,’ it’s going to make them better. It’s going to make them want to be part of the program.”
MUBA Head Coach Nathan Crosswell said he can’t wait to see what Wyndham’s athletes are able to produce within the academy program.
“Having already seen major development from our current crop of academy athletes, bringing a new collection of talented basketball players into the fold is really exciting,” Crosswell said.
“Our program is going to give access to new development opportunities and really enhance the level in which they can improve their skills and play like a Melbourne United player.
“They’ll be learning our style from a program designed by Melbourne United’s coaches.”
Wyndham Basketball General Manager Jason Kelly said working with United will go a long way in establishing a pathway for young athletes to reach their potential.
“It’s very exciting to be the first and currently the only association this side of the Westgate Bridge to form a relationship with Melbourne United,” Kelly said.
“We see having the connection from grassroots to the absolute elite of Australian basketball as a great opportunity for exposure for Wyndham basketball as an entity, but also for our players and coaches to see that elite pathway and where basketball can take them.
“It’s going to help the players be able to understand not just learning the skill sets and the fundamentals that involve being a better basketball player and to improve, but they’ll be able to see the pathway.
“It’s the old saying, if you can’t see, you can’t be it. Being involved in this will give them exposure to what Melbourne United have to offer in terms of that player skill and fundamental development, but also see what that pathway looks like, which they may not get to see normally.”

As the largest basketball association in the western metropolitan area of Melbourne, Wyndham Basketball has over 10,000 active participants across the Wyndham Basketball competitions and programs. From introductory and development grassroots basketball programs to junior and senior domestic competition, through to junior and senior representative teams competing in the Victoria Junior Basketball League and Big V League respectively. Additionally, Wyndham Basketball has one of the largest offerings in Inclusion Basketball programs.
