At the Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Sunday 8th December 2019, the WBA membership voted to change our association name change to the Wyndham Basketball Association. This outcome is an exciting opportunity for the future of the association and for basketball throughout the rapidly growing Wyndham area.

The WBA is more than basketball, we are an important community organisation.

Wyndham Basketball Association is a name our entire membership can own and call their own. Today, 9 of our 13 affiliated clubs are based in suburbs other than Werribee, and more than 70% of our current players reside in suburbs other than Werribee. These figures are set to increase as the wider Wyndham region grows rapidly. The name will help attract more Wyndham residents to our sport.

The Werribee Basketball Association was established in 1972 and we have a long and proud history. We are committed to honouring and enhancing that history and always acknowledging the wonderful contributors that got us to this point. Whilst we are changing our name, we are retaining our traditional colours of gold, royal blue and red and we’ll continue to be known as the ‘WBA’.

This is not a change we have taken lightly and has been discussed at great length. Earlier this year, the name proposal was presented to, and supported by, Basketball Victoria. More recently, briefing sessions with our club presidents and WBA life members were conducted, and we were really encouraged by the support and positive feedback. This support was reaffirmed at the AGM.

In 2019 an impressive 7238 unique players played in our domestic competitions, we have a record 582 teams competing this season, there were a record 814 participants in Aussie Hoops (3rd highest in Australia), and we reached more than 5000 students through Sporting Schools basketball clinics.

As the 2nd largest community sports association in the western suburbs and the largest in Wyndham, changing our name will help to increase our profile as we become a leader in sport in Wyndham, the western suburbs and across the state.

Our VJBL Rep teams will complete the 2019/20 season as Werribee, while our Big V teams in 2020 will compete as Wyndham with our junior rep program following suit in 2020/21.

We are delighted with this development, and with the support of our membership, we look forward to our entire community embracing our new name, the Wyndham Basketball Association.

We would like thank all athletes for attending the 2019/20 Werribee Devils U21 VJBL tryouts. We would also like to thank all the coaches and volunteers who helped us during the tryouts.

Congratulations to all successful players and best of luck for the coming season. To the players who were unsuccessful in making a team, we sincerely thank you for your efforts and wish you the best of luck in your future basketball endeavors.

The start of the Big V season may still months away, but we’re excited to reveal our first big signing for the Champ Men this season is US pro Aaron Harrison.

Harrison has played professionally in Luxembourg, Argentina and Germany, as well as a previous stint here in Australia.

Prior to his professional career, Harrison was a college star with Lynn University in the US.

The left-hander is an athletic forward who is known for his versatility, athleticism and ability to score from the perimeter.
Harrison said he was excited about signing for Werribee and was ready for a huge 2020 Big V season.

“I’m excited to be part of a new Werribee side and I can’t wait to show the league that we are going to compete every night we touch the floor,” Harrison said.

“I was initially attracted to Werribee because of the appointment of John Dorge as head coach – he’s a legend!”

“After some research on the club I saw it has a rich history in the community and I thought the clubs’ core beliefs and my own fit perfectly together,” Harrison concluded.

Champ Men Head Coach John Dorge said Harrison was an excited prospect who would play a central role in the team next season.

“Aaron is a great early signing for us. He brings an athleticism and energy on court and will prove to be a very tough opponent next season,” Dorge explained.

“Aaron can play multiple positions offensively and defensively and is an exciting player to watch.”

Keep an eye out for more signings in the next couple of weeks!

Wyndham Basketball is thrilled to announce it has secured the hosting rights of the 2021 Australian U18 Championships and Kevin Coombs Cup.

In a massive coup for the association, Basketball Australia’s prestigious U18 event will see elite junior basketballers come together in Wyndham to be crowned Australian champion. Alongside the Kevin Coombs Cup – Basketball Australia’s premier Wheelchair junior championship – the tournament is sure to be a highlight for local players, sports fans and the community.

Eagle Stadium will play host to both tournaments as Werribee Basketball and Wyndham show off our ability to host events on a national scale.

Highlighting the significance of the event to our wider region, Werribee Basketball was joined by Joanne Ryan MP, Councillor Peter Maynard and Western Leisure Services CEO Alison Dixon in making the announcement.

Werribee Basketball’s General Manager Robbie Coyle outlined the exciting benefits of bringing a championship of this stature to Wyndham.

“For Werribee Basketball to be hosting the National Championships here in Wyndham is massive and the whole event is going to energise our entire community. We hope it serves to inspire the next generation of players, referees, coaches and volunteers,” Coyle said.

“It will provide a fantastic stimulus for the local business community too. Recent economic reports from previous hosts Townsville and Ballarat outline a direct economic impact of between $2 million and $4 million, and an indirect impact boosting the local economy even further.

“Werribee is a world class tourism destination and we want to encourage the visitors for these championships to get out and discover what we’ve got. With Avalon Airport on our doorstep, and wonderful attractions like the Werribee Open Range Zoo, Werribee Mansion, Pacific Werribee and Shadowfax Wines,” Coyle added.

“We know our local community will get behind the 2021 Australian U18 Championships and Kevin Coombs Cup to ensure we show off our region and our ability to compete on the national stage.”

Basketball Australia Executive General Manager, Paul Maley, commented on the importance of the Australian Under-18 Championships and Kevin Coombs Cup and acknowledged the excellent bid from Werribee Basketball.

“The championships are an integral part of Basketball Australia’s High Performance pathway, bringing together some of the nation’s top young talent, with many athletes potentially progressing through to NBL and WNBL ranks, before also vying for Australian national team representation, including at Olympic and Paralympic levels.

“The tender from Werribee Basketball was of a very high quality, and we know they will put together an excellent event. We’re excited about the prospect of hosting a major tournament at Eagle Stadium and in such a fast growing region of Melbourne,” Maley said.

The tournament will be held 10-17April 2021, further scheduling details will be released at a later date.
