Wyndham Basketball Association Welcomes New Coaching Directors

Wyndham Basketball Association (WBA) is proud to announce the appointment of two outstanding individuals to key leadership roles within our coaching team. Please join us in welcoming Tom Latus as our new Director of Coaching – Domestic, and Matt Stephens as our new Director of Coaching – Representative.

These appointments mark a significant step forward in WBA’s commitment to elevating basketball development at both grassroots and representative levels.

Tom Latus brings with him extensive knowledge and experience in community and domestic basketball. A passionate advocate for participation and inclusion, Tom will work closely with James Welsh (WBA Participation Coordinator) and Kylie Bozanic (WBA Inclusion Officer) to deliver inclusive and engaging programs such as Aussie Hoops, the Domestic Development Academy, Wyndham School Clinics, and Inclusion Programs.

Tom will also play a key role in supporting WBA’s Club Coaching Coordinators, helping to build consistency and confidence across coaching standards. His ability to engage with both coaches and players makes him an exciting addition to the domestic basketball space at WBA.

Matt Stephens is no stranger to the Wyndham basketball community. With over 15 years of coaching experience in the VJBL, 10 years in the Big V, and his current role as a Basketball Victoria High Performance Coach, Matt brings a wealth of expertise and a deep connection to the local basketball scene.

As Director of Coaching – Representative, Matt will lead the development of a progressive and high-impact curriculum for all representative levels, from Under 12s through to Under 20s. He will oversee programs including Rising Stars, Representative Holiday Camps, and our elite High-Performance pathways, while also mentoring our junior representative coaches.

Wyndham Basketball Association (WBA) is taking a proactive step to ensure a safer, more welcoming environment across its competitions and events with the launch of a 12-month Body Worn Camera (BWC) trial. Beginning on June 2, the initiative will see authorised Competition Supervisors and WBA Executive Team Members wearing BWC during senior domestic competitions on Monday and Wednesday evenings at Eagle Stadium.

The trial, developed in consultation with key stakeholders including Western Leisure Services, Wyndham City Council, and Basketball Victoria, aims to reduce antisocial behaviour and support safer community sport. The BWCs will only be activated when necessary, in public spaces, and patrons will be notified when recording begins.

Strict protocols have been put in place to protect the privacy of players, staff, and spectators, ensuring all footage is managed in line with legal requirements. Clear signage, staff training, and online communications will keep the community informed throughout the trial.

WBA and WLS will assess the impact of the trial and use the findings to guide future decisions. For more details, click here or contact the association directly at (03) 9742 5440 or info@wyndhambasketball.com.

The Wyndham Disability Connection Expo is back and ready to help those living with a disability feel more connected with the wider community.People with disabilities, their families, carers and support persons will have the opportunity to connect with support services in the area, as well as meet other people living with disability.

Guests will be able to acquaint themselves with resources that may help them gain employment skills, refer them to the most suitable health clinicians and discover social opportunities. Kylie Bozanic runs the Wyndham All Abilities Basketball club, and has been involved in the planning of the expo for the past 12 months.

“The day is more so to connect people with the providers, but then also people with disabilities can find activities and respite options as well,” she said.

“Without knowing where to actually find these services, they can be very hard to locate.”

Ms. Bozanic said programs such as all abilities basketball, which will feature at the expo, can make a world of difference in the life of someone with disabilities.

“It’s a sense of belonging, and it becomes part of their routine which means they can become better connected with the community,” she said.

“They have somewhere they belong and can really make friends out it.”

This event is open to everyone, those with lived experience of disability, NDIS participants, and those not NDIS supported. The expo will run at the Encore Event’s Centre in Hoppers Crossing between 10am-3pm on Thursday, May 29.
