Werribee Basketball is pleased to announce the new role of Coaching and Programs Coordinator has been filled by Jackie Gibson.
The new role has a focus on administration of our VJBL, Big V, the emerging 3x3Hustle and many other programs. Jackie brings a wealth of basketball experience in playing, coaching and across the last 12 months as boys coaching lead here at Werribee Basketball.
In addition to her basketball background, Jackie also has a Masters in Teaching.
With a massive VJBL program, the Champ Women aiming to go back-to-back and Boomers legend John Dorge signed on as Champ Men coach, Jackie said she is excited to come on board.
“There’s a buzz around Werribee Basketball at the moment, from the junior rep program right through to what we’re doing in the Championship Division of Big V,” Jackie explained.
“I’m thrilled to be working in basketball. It’s my passion, I love playing and coaching and I can’t wait to help to continue to build on Werribee’s momentum,” Jackie added.
“And 3x3Hustle is so new and exciting. Werribee Basketball has a real chance to be at the forefront of it!”
Player and Coach Development Manager Reece Potter said Jackie’s role would be pivotal in boosting our representative programs off court.
“Jackie will be key in us taking our off court performance to the next level, while we will also utilize her coaching expertise and knowledge in key development programs,” Reece said.
“She will be a great asset to our staff. She is a great operator, organised and has the ability to work with a wide range of stakeholders including players, parents, officials and coaches,” he added.
“I greatly look forward to working with Jackie as an integral part of our full time staff.”
The Coaching and Programs Coordinator role was previously advertised as the Programs Manager and has been tweaked once we secured someone of Jackie’s abilities.
Jackie started at Werribee Basketball on Monday and is based in the Head Office.
With our VJBL rep tryouts fast approaching Werribee Basketball is pleased to confirm our coaching leads for 2019/20 are Mason Rogers (girls) and Grant Duca (boys).
Mason continues in the role he has fulfilled for the previous 2 VJBL seasons, while Grant comes in to replace Jackie Gibson, who is now working full time as the Coaching & Programs Coordinator.
Joining both Grant as the Assistant Coaching Lead is Kyle Ogden. With our exceptional growth of teams across the last five years (from 27 to over 40 in just the last three years!) Kyle will help provide support to our teams, players and coaches.
Mason said he was grateful for the opportunity to again head the girls’ side of the program.
“I’m proud of what we have achieved across the last 2 years and can’t wait to continue to grow our girls’ program to be the premier junior program in the state.” Mason explained.
Grant said he was excited to take on the boys’ side of the program and knew it was a big task ahead.
“The VJBL program at Werribee is an exciting place to be and I’m looking forward to be able to help drive our boys’ players improved across the 2019/20 season.”
Kyle said he was pumped to help out where he could.
“I love coaching and guiding both players and coaches and I hope I can share my passion to help the program in 2019/20.”
Player and Coach Development Manager Reece Potter said:
“It is great to have Mason continue in the Girls Coaching Lead role for another year. He has done an outstanding job building strong relationships with players, coaches and parents in the girls’ program over the last two seasons and will continue to work hard to drive improved results and outcomes for the girls program in 2020,” Potter said.
“Since joining the WBA over 12 months again, Grant has immersed himself in our development and high performance programs, becoming an integral part of our association. His appointment as the Boys Coaching Lead is recognition for this hard work and dedication and I look forward to working with Grant to drive success in the boys program,” Potter added.
“The creation of the Assistant Coaching Lead position is recognition of the growth of our program and the need to support our coaches and players in a professional manner. The role will focus on supporting less experienced coaches, players and teams in our VJBL program. Kyle’s enthusiasm for player development and energy for coaching makes him the perfect person to take on this new role as he will get out on court and support the teams that need the most help and guidance.”
Our Annual General Meeting will be held on Sunday, December 8 at 10am.

After a whirlwind 12 months Werribee Basketball’s much-loved BDO Jarrod Moore is moving back to New South Wales.
In proof his hard work at Werribee has paid off, Jarrod has taken up the position of Coach Development Manager with Basketball NSW.
While disappointed to be leaving Werribee, Jarrod said the opportunity was an exciting one for his career.
“I’m so proud of what we have been able to achieve at Werribee over the past 12 months. I have witnessed all forms of growth within the association at all levels and I have learned a lot during my time here,” Jarrod said.
“From working with Reece, to the coaches and administrative team here, there is no doubt working at Werribee has helped me reach the next level of my career.”
In a short period, Jarrod has overseen tremendous growth of our introductory program Aussie Hoops, initiated the start of programs like Hoops Academy and Li’l Rookies, while maintaining the strong reputation enjoyed by DDP.
Player and Coach Development Manager Reece Potter said Jarrod’s influence on Werribee Basketball – particularly in the Aussie Hoops space – will be felt for a long time to come.
“I think all of our Aussie Hoops and DDP coaches have improved under Jarrod’s guidance. Just by watching the way he interacts with junior players, he’s so enthusiastic it’s infectious,” Reece said.
“We really thank Jarrod for all the work he has put in and wish him all the very best with the move to a state association,” Reece added.
“What this move does highlight is that Werribee Basketball is now a fantastic pathway for players, coaches and administrators, which is great for our reputation.”
Jarrod will finish up on September 14 so make sure to wish him well when you next see him at Eagle Stadium.
Werribee Basketball will now commence the recruitment process for this crucial basketball development role.
Representing your association at an U/14s National Championships is a great honour.
And that’s exactly what Werribee referee Tate Wheatland will be doing after being selected by Basketball Australia to officiate at the upcoming tournament in Ballarat this September.
At just 18, Tate has quickly become one of Werribee’s leading referees and said he can’t wait for the challenge of a Nationals Championship.
“Being selected is definitely one of my biggest accomplishments,” Tate explained.
“It’s been a big year for me, I’m in my first year refereeing Big V, I’ve just turned 18, but I know I’m still young and have a long way to go. Getting this invitation to ref at the National Championships has proven to me that putting in hard work pays off,” Tate said.
“You might think no-one is watching but you never know where opportunities will pop up!”
Clearly, one of the keys to Tate’s success with the whistle has been his passion for the craft.
“I love what I do. When you love what you do and you put the work in, you go places,” Tate said.
Tate also said he has also had a lot of great support from the TOC (formally VRBA) here at Werribee.
“There’s a lot of Werribee Basketball people within our refereeing department who are behind me, who have been supportive from the very start. I’m proud that we have a pathway for aspiring referees,” Tate said.
“Having mentors around the Werribee program, who have officiated at the highest levels really helps. Jason Kelly was one especially who has helped me and provided an amazing insight into WNBL and SEABL (now NBL1) refereeing.”
And just how far does Tate hope to take his refereeing?
“I definitely see it more as a career path for me. Ultimately, I’d like to get my FIBA license. There’s currently only about 13 Australians at the moment and I’d love to be part of that.”
Basketball history is littered with meteoric rises, but there may never have been a story quite like Puga Deng’s.
Just two short years ago, Puga was playing D-grade junior domestic for Hoppers Crossing. After the completion of her second season in Werribee’s Youth Women Big V squad, she has been offered a full scholarship to play college basketball at ASA College in Miami.
While playing for Hoppers, she was spotted by WBA Player and Coach Development Manager Reece Potter who asked if she’d like to tryout for our Big V Youth Women. The rest, as they say, is history.
As modest as ever, Puga says the whole experience, culminating in a college scholarship, has been a bit of a dream.
“All this craziness happened after Reece asked me to tryout for Youth League. I was worried being so inexperienced playing with girls who had been playing since they were 5 or 6 years old, but I just watched what they were doing and tried to learn from them.”
At just 20, Puga clearly has a wonderful work ethic and focus on learning and developing her game.
“I didn’t think I was good enough and I think people were interested because I was tall. But I’ve put in a lot of extra work, just trying to develop small parts of my game every week,” Puga explained.
“I love training. I always leave happy, it makes me happy to be on court working on my game.”
This appetite for work was spotted at Eagle Stadium by Werribee local and NBL star Kuany Kuany, who helped Puga with some workouts and put her in contact with ASA, not that she thought anything would come of it.
“I couldn’t believe it when they made the offer to me. I thought it was a joke! I know I’ve still got a lot to learn, but it’s going to be a wonderful environment for me to do so,” Puga said.
Puga said she owed a lot to the Werribee program and in particular her Youth League coaches.
“Werribee Basketball has helped me so much. Throughout my time here I have seen the Werribee Basketball culture grow so much and it is just so inclusive and connected. I felt it best at games where us girls really felt the love from the crowd,” Puga said.
“Mason (Rogers, head coach) is a great coach, Jade (Hodges, assistant coach) has been so supportive and Adrian (Edwards, assistant coach) has been huge for my individual skill development. I really appreciate the time all three have put into helping me get to where I am now.”
And is Puga excited for what’s next?
“I’ve never even been to America – it really is all like a dream!”
The Werribee Devils Championship Men head coach is responsible for leading the Big V Championship Program, working with the WBA to achieve successful outcomes both on and off the court.
